Understanding Language Delay and Disorder
Language is a fundamental tool for communication, learning, and social interaction. A language delay refers to a child developing language skills in the typical order but at a slower pace. In contrast, a language disorder involves a child developing language in an atypical way, with difficulties in understanding (receptive language) or using language (expressive language). These challenges can impact a child’s ability to express their thoughts, understand instructions, or tell a story, which can affect their confidence and relationships.
Our therapy for language delays and disorders is based on a play-led and child-centred approach. Katy works with your child through engaging activities and games to build foundational skills, such as vocabulary, sentence structure, and narrative abilities. Parents are actively involved in the sessions, learning strategies and techniques they can use at home to support their child’s language development. This collaborative model ensures that learning continues beyond the therapy room, empowering both the child and their family.
